Statement

Using a foundation of tradition Chinese painting silk, I explore the intricate relationships between cultural inheritance, history, and the natural world. Drawing on the legacy of the East India Company's 18th-century exploits, my paintings pay homage to the movement of people, skilled artisans and the cultural exchange that transformed global landscapes— economically, artistically and ecologically. Ships laden with porcelain and silk, decorated with richly patterned scenes of life in exotic countries, embellished with wild, unseen flora and fauna, these objects carried also ancient production techniques, skills and labour, passed down like treasured heirlooms, forever altering the visual and cultural fabric of their host countries.
